Mary Ellen Welsh

Mary Ellen Welsh, age 88, of Brookfield, died Friday, February 26, 2021, at Tall Grass Creek Senior Living in Overland Park, Kansas.

Services will be Saturday, March 6, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Brookfield with Fr. Kelechi Uzuegbu officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Brookfield. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church.  Services are under the direction of Wright Funeral Home in Brookfield.

Mary Ellen, daughter of Frank Bernard and Mary Helen (Tillman) Kuhlman, was born June 2, 1932 in Brookfield. On November 19, 1960, she married Robert Leo Welsh.

Mary earned a bachelor’s degree from Mount St. Scolastica in Atchison, Kansas in 1954, then received her master’s degree in Chemistry from Florida State University.  She was an educator, GED and substitute teacher, a homemaker, loving wife and mother and grandmother.  She was active in her church. She was also a member of Cosmopolitan Society, Red Hat Society and participated in several Elder hostel learning institute classes.

In 2009, Mary Ellen donated her grandparents house in Brookfield to the Linn County Historical Society to be made into a museum.  It is now known as the Tillman House Museum.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Leo Welsh; three sons, Thomas Robert Welsh and wife, Carol and their children, Gabrielle, Wainani and Kaikea of Weatherby Lake, John Patrick Welsh and wife, Sherrie and their children, Matthew, and Caroline of Leawood, Kansas and Dennis William Welsh and wife, Heidi and their children, Charlotte, Lucas and Stephanie of Lincoln, Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
