Alma was born on January 30, 1933 in Brookfield, MO to Laurence & Nellie Mae (Ball) Bivens.  On May 19, 1951 Alma married Ernie Lowell “E.L.” Shiflett, Jr.  To this union they were blessed with a daughter, Susan Lynn & a son, Robert Lowell (Bob).

Alma had definite skills for sewing, even creating patterns out of newspaper! She constructed many brides, bridesmaids, and flower girl dresses through the years, not to mention the countless wardrobe pieces she sewed for her daughter & son.  Sewing wasn’t her only talent.  Many people/groups were the recipients of her crochet works.  Lots of doilies, dolls, afghans, bedspreads, placemats, & tablecloths were beautifully made, either given as gifts or donated for charitable deeds.  Some of her favorite pieces were item she created for her grandchildren.  In her earlier days, it wasn’t uncommon to find Alma participating in motorcycle races, poker runs, & go-kart races.   She and her husband enjoyed many years of entertaining & fun with family & friends at their lake home at Lake Nehai Tonkayea.   Alma was also an avid bowler and received many awards.  She looked forward to going to the league nights, area tournaments, & numerous state tournaments. As a charter member of the Eagles Auxiliary, Alma spent many years of dedicated service to this organization. She held many offices as well as being a mentor to newcomers.  It was not uncommon to see her in the kitchen/hall preparing meals with the Aerie men.  Alma also took on the responsibility, up until her passing, as the planner/organizer of the Class of 1951 reunions. Always a smile on her face when family showed up to spend time with her or a surprise dinner out. The evening often ended with a short cruise which usually involved some ice cream.

Alma is survived by her daughter, Susie, of Hemingford NE, son, Bob, of Brookfield, MO, brother & sister-in-law, Jack & Joyce Bivens of Bedford Tx, Jeffery Bivens of Brookfield, MO.  Grandchildren Misty (Jamie) Graham, Cherise (Dennis) Horton, Dusty Cheek, Silas (Tina) Cheek, & Jacob Christian. Step Grandchildren JR (Teresa) Cheek & Sheri Richey. Great- Grandchildren Madison, Isabella, & Alayna Jane Horton, Aspen, Rylan, Talon, & Oakley Cheek, Anna & Gavin Cheek, & Rosalie Wingate.
