Mary (Craig) Gibson-Dixon

Mary L. Gibson-Dixon age 87, passed on Christmas Day, December 25, 2018, at her granddaughter’s residence in Mendon MO where she resided. Her granddaughter, Audra Hoeg was her primary caregiver at that time.

Funeral services will be Friday, January 4, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at Park Baptist Church in Brookfield with Pastor David Blakely officiating.  Burial will be in Grove Hill Cemetery near Purdin.  The family will receive friends Friday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at the church.

Mary was born on April 12, 1931, on a farm located near Bear Branch Cemetery outside of Shelby, MO, to Joseph Archie Allen Craig and Donna May Cornwell Craig. The Craig family consisted of 10 siblings including Vincent Harvey, Erwin Francis, Bernice Aletha, Maudie Elizabeth, Ethel Ann, Mabel Catherine, Joseph Don, James Henry, Mary Lou, & Robert Eugene. She was the last surviving member of the family.

Mary initially attended Shelby school and graduated from Brookfield High School in 1949. She later attended Chillicothe Business College. She married Clarence M. Gibson in 1952. Shortly thereafter they purchased and moved to the family farm in the Stains community outside Brookfield. Their only child John C. Gibson and his wife Alberta purchased the farm in 1985 and currently reside there. Mary later married John R. Dixon in 2007. 

Mary was a bookkeeper for Blue Chip Mills & North MO Lumber Company.  She also worked outside the farm at the Black Jack Restaurant, Tills Champlain Truck Stop, and as a secretary for the Marceline Christian Church.  Later she worked as bookkeeper and medical assistant to Dr. John R. Dixon then with Pershing Memorial Hospital. Following retirement, she worked as caregiver for several elderly friends and individuals. Mary volunteered for the OATS transportation services and as “pink lady” at Pershing Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Stains Social Club and a member Park Baptist Church in Brookfield.

She is survived by her son and his wife, John Craig and Alberta Kay Gibson of rural Brookfield; four grandchildren, Angela D. & Doug Campbell of Warrensburg, John A. & Kelle Gibson of Marceline, Audra K. & Bud Hoeg of Mendon, and Clarence M. & Mary Gibson of Marceline; fourteen (14) great-grandchildren, five (5) great great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, brothers & sisters, and one grandchild Curtis Kendrick.

Mary was happiest when she was around family. She cherished the times when her brothers and sisters and their families visited the farm and then later in life when they got together for family reunions that she hosted to keep them close.  She cared for her elderly mother and gave support and care for her brothers, sisters and their families dealing with critical health issues later in life. She loved her immediate family and was always there for her son and his wife, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
